recently i was asked, why is honey not vegan?

i gave the simple answer, vegans do not consume any products that are derived from any animal. bees do not make honey with the intention of human consumption, therefore to consume honey would, in essence, be an exploitation of the animal, which may also involve undue suffering to the bees. right?

well, yes, partly. but it was for the most part just a universal knowledge to me that vegans DON'T eat honey.

so off i went to go look it up and read up on it and i came across this section on bees from the Vegan Society website. i had no idea how horribly that bees were treated in the process of making honey!! for the love of bees, don't eat honey!!

so we went over to joe and colleen's for food and drinks and christmas. so much fun. george. yeah. he's crazy. and totally awesome. seriously such a cutie. maddie played shy as usual, but i think she really enjpyed the whole day. i totally forgot my camera cartrige so sadly i have no pictures. i do however have videos! but...i have no idea how to get them on here. haha. hopefully my mom or someone will send me some pctures??

anyways, we brought food with us of course. matthew made hummas and i made spinach dip. i had a few inquiries about the vegan spinach dip so here ya go,

1 cup veganaise
2 cups (so one tub) tofutti sour cream
1 pkg. frozen spinach
1 pkg. knorr's veg. soup mix
3 cloves of garlic
1/4 cup chopped green onion

i can't remember where i got that recipe, but i made it for my baby shower too and so i had it saved on my computer from 2 years ago. the lasy 2 ingredients i just added 'cause i like them, so i guess they would be optional.

so, we decided this year to try and give gifts that were mainly either re-used, re-cycled, or handmade. i drew my Uncle in the secret santa and i decided to make him some reusable grocery bags for part of his gift. in total there will be 1 big one and 2 smaller ones that fit inside (for those smaller grocery stops).

i just finished the bigger one. i still have to sew the handles on to the smaller ones, but they should be finished tonight.

a bit about them...they are different shades of blue. they are all made of cotton canvas and are fully lined. the little bicycle patch is from Earth's General Store on Whyte Ave. and is on all 3 of the bags.

i really wanted to make something for him that was a bit more personal and more stylish than the ones you can buy for a dollar at the store. i hope he likes them...

so, weird....i got post on a Sunday! in fact, me and matthew combined got 3 christmas parcels today!! i imagine they must be working around the clock trying to get everything out before christmas. in amongst the parcels, i got a gift from Aera Cura! Turns out she got my name in the swap, which funny becuase i got hers!

there is chocolate (gone), chocolate coffee (can not wait to try this), gummy bracelets, a snowflake ornament, a gnome ornament (at least i think it's a gnome...), a candle, and....get this, homemade soap! it smells really good AND it has Sunlight's symbol in it! how cool is that!?! I am so excited to try it!
and of course, PONIES!

I love them all, but I am especially so ecstatic about Wiggles. I have wanted her for so long and she has always been such a pain to hunt down. and...this one is the best pony of them all....

the last day of summer

sad. today is the last day of summer. it seems like it went by so fast. or maybe it was that we had such a rainy summer, with a week of sun, and then overnight it turned to fall. the fall chill is already in the air. we decided to take maddie to the park today just in case this chilly air turns to snow faster than we may want it to. we got some really great pictures out of it.

we went to the lake today. it was so nice to just be outside in the sun and to enjoy the water. maddie and the rest of the kids seemed to have a ton of fun and maddie had her very first ice cream cone!

we celebrated Fathers Day today, instead of last week. We had yummy, yummy, vegan French toast and opened a ton of presents. It was pouring rain outside all day, but we had lovely day inside eating so much good food and watching the kids play. Madeleine managed to put her tooth through her lip though after falling, but after a little quiet time together in her room, she was ok and we went back to brunch. George is getting humongous! He got to get his birthday present from us today as well. and it was Richards birthday too! so lots of presents to go around!

well, I finally received my Brazilian Sunlight in the mail!! She is of course stunning! I am so close to finishing this set, it hurts. I can't seem to find that last one though!!! **frustration** My searches for her so far have been fruitless, to the point that I am willing to pay well above the market value for her, which is I believe about $80. because my missing one is the French Sunlight w/ freckles and I already own the one without freckles, my set still looks pretty complete. well, the search continues...in the meantime though, here is my Brazilian Sunlight!

I should probably already be in bed, because I have a 6:45am flight, but I am just too excited. In the morning we are flying to B.C. to go to the Cure concert on Monday!!! We've had our tickets for almost a year now and the show got postponed till now and so it's been a long wait...but it's here. it's finally here. I absolutely can't wait much longer. I get to go to B.C., go to the beach, eat at amazing vegetarian restaurants, and see Robert Smith!!!

I am going to miss Madeleine like crazy. She will be staying at my moms for the days we are gone. I miss her already and it has only been a couple hours since I last saw her. I love her. She is so wonderful.

I went to the Greenhouse today and bought some flowers for the front flowers bed. Irises, Lilies, Sunflowers, Dahlias, and a few others. Despite the pouring rain, me and Matt planted them all this evening. They look wonderful. Maybe the skies will clear up enough tomorrow for me to take some pictures. *crosses fingers*

I am going to go back in a week or 2 and get a few trees for the front yard as well. an Apple tree, a Cherry tree, and a Hibiscus plant. Maybe our grass will be a bit greener by then.

Other news...Madeleine...walks!!! pretty good too. she is toddling all over the place. too cute. I am so proud of her. My heart smiles just thinking about it. Since the only word she really knows is 'Aida' (our cat's name), she's been chasing Aida around and screeching her name at her. It's really funny, but I don't think Aida likes these new developments at all, Lol.

2008 collectors fair exclusives

these are the exclusives for 2008!!

the pink one is for the U.S. My Little Pony Fair held this year in Rhode Island. and the second one is for the My Little Pony Convention being held in Germany. I absolutely love the designs. very Victorian wallpaper-esk.

The U.S. exclusive will only be made available to fair attendees, but me and Karlee have someone going for us to pick a few up!! Maybe next year I will be able to go to the fair, but I have already been travelling a fair amount so far this year, so it isn't in the cards. This girl will be a wonderful consolation though.

The Germany (UK) exclusive has been made available to everyone through pre-order. and I am on the list to receive one!! The pre-order is now sold out otherwise I would have gotten 2.

my neighbors probably think I am crazy.
every half hour I'm running out to the mailbox to see if there is a package waiting in there for me. nope. It's only been a couple weeks since I bought my loose Greek Sunlight so I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another week to get here, but I can't wait. I'm so excited for her to arrive!

Later today, I'm headed out to IKEA to find some more pony shelves. I've never had enough room, and quite a few ponies have always lived a box life, but even my girls that I have room to put out, are starting to live in pretty tight quarters. and I have 8 ponies on the way, so I definitely need the extra room. One day they will all have a spot on the wall, but right now i have to be selective, so only ponies in complete sets will be displayed. As I complete sets, more shelves will be bought!

I bought these lovelies almost a month ago and they arrived today, after much fretting on my part. This is the second time, different sellers though, that I have bought these 2 ponies and the first time I sent them back to the girl because they were moldy and missing hair...eww. So as the days and weeks went by and I still didn't find them sitting in my mailbox, I started to think, maybe I am not supposed to own these ponies...

At first I was expecting them to take a bit longer because they came from the Netherlands, but then another pony from another seller in the Netherlands that I bought 2 weeks after, came a week before! So I thought for sure something was wrong. Anyways, they are here, safe and sound, and gorgeous.

the people who occupied this house before us decided that it would be awesome if last fall they raked all the leaves into piles and then...left them. thank you, you are jerks.

me and matt worked for hours yesterday and I worked for quite a few this morning all ready and it still looks terrible. I love yard work, but this is ridiculous. I can't wait until it's all pretty again. it's my mission of the summer for sure. To make matters worse, we have a double corner lot, which will be amazing once it is inhabitable, but it is massive to clean. I went up the block yesterday and we are THE WORST house on the block. In fact, all the other yards look great. The next worse to ours is our neighbors and it appears that it might just be leaves and mess from our yard blown over on to their yard from the wind. how embarrassing. So far, 30 GIANT garbage bags of leaves. yikes.

here are a few 'before' pictures. and these aren't even the real 'before' before pictures. these are the pictures I took this morning after me and matt put in so much work yesterday. I wanted to post them so that when I post pictures in a month or so, you can be astounded at the difference. We moved into this house so that Madeleine could have a yard to play in and I am determined to make this mess playable. My dreams of having a garden in the back might have to wait until next summer by the looks of it, but I am going to try.

a few weeks ago, there was an auction for a French Applejack. the auction had no description, no shipping details...just this one lonely picture.

she looks pretty nice in the picture, but I've learned that you can't go on a picture alone or you end up with a trashed pony and there is nothing you can do about it, because you didn't ask any questions. so I messaged the seller, about shipping, about a ton of details that I wanted to know...no response. no responses from sellers worry me. but I really wanted this pony. and her bid was still quite a bit lower than I would potentially be willing to pay for her. so i waited till the last possible minute for the seller to reply to my questions, but still nothing...but what if she ended up being beautiful? for such a low price? so I bid. I bid $40. which is half the amount I would have paid for her. and to my surprise actually, I won! if this pony ended up being in wonderful condition, what a sweet deal it would be. but maybe I had just spent $40 on a pony who possibly has a giant black marker streak going down her back or is missing the entire back half of her hair or any number of possible faults.

three weeks later, today, she arrived in the mail.

and she is perfect!! I am really happy with her. no giant black marks, symbols are perfect and even still have their French trademark metallic paint on them, her hair is beautiful. I love her.

the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show was today.

It seemed to be a great turn out. Me and Karlee had a booth set up selling ponies, of course. I sold quite a few ponies and got to bring my Greek MOC ponies along to show off a bit. Our booth was right next to Ernie Hudson's (the black Ghost Buster!) which was really cool. You know, sometimes when you see or meet a celebrity out of character, especially when they are an icon from you childhood, it seems fathomable that at one time they could have been that character, but you have to strain to imagine it? do you know what I mean? well Ernie, is not like that. he IS the black Ghost Buster. when I was talking to him, it just seemed surreal to me that he was standing in front of me. I kept wondering why he didn't have a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, Lol. If he had pulled out his Proton pack right in front of me and busted a ghost, I don't think I would have been at all surprised.

so I have had a pony trade in the works for a little while now, with my new lovely friend from the Netherlands, Jeanette. Jeanette doesn't collect ponies, she collects Disney stuff. So the trade was, a French Sunlight for me and in return I bought some Disney stuff off of E-bay for her. I also had my eye on an Italian Applejack and a U.K. Bowtie, but had decided that I would maybe get them another time. well, I got my package today, and it said on the customs forms: 2x ponies and stickers. 2x ponies? must be a mistake. I opened my package and pulled out my lovely French Sunlight that I have been wanting for soOOoo long...ah happiness. but wait, there really are 2 ponies in this box! no? really? Jeanette, you can't be serious. can you? and then there she was, Italian Applejack. I had to flip her over and check her feet just to make sure I wasn't going crazy. seriously, who just throws in an gratis Italian pony? the lovely Jeanette, that's who. I can't even believe how nice that is. She even included a card for me to thank me for the great trade, which I am going to put into a binder that will one day also be the home of MLP brochures and pamphlets. so now I have a pony friend in the Netherlands, which is really cool. I'm looking forward to my next trade with her and getting my chance to spoil her a bit.

I have come to a point in my collection where I have been focusing more and more on 'nirvana' ponies, that is, foreign ponies. I am even considering downsizing my current collection in order to afford more precious pieces in my collection, as obviously 'nirvana' ponies tend to be quite a bit rarer and therefore quite a bit pricier. Different countries tend to lend themselves to being even more expensive. The ultimate? Greek ponies.

"Ponies made in Greece were produced by a company called El Greco. They are very hard to find and desireable, as there were not a whole lot made. Rumor has it that the cause for this is the El Greco factory supposedly burned down, though this has not been confirmed.

Greek ponies have some interesting traits! The most outstanding one would be their symbols- many tend to bleed, resulting in an aura of color around them. It usually happens but is not limited to symbols containing red dye. As it is so common, it generally not considered as a flaw by most collectors. Other prominent traits are their thick, almost "Egyptian like", as collectors have compared it to, eyeliner, their squishy plastic, and their "choppy hair". well, now you know a bit more about Greek ponies! yes? now on to the real reason for this entry...I just bought these three mint on card Greek rainbow ponies! Parasol and 2 differnt versions of Sunlight (she is my favorite pony, one day I will have all of her different country variations!). here are the sale pictures, I will update with new pictures when they arrive.

These beauties will also be my first mint on card ponies! I think I need to recoup my wallet a bit after this particular expenditure!

easter?...not sure what else to call it....happy...bunny day? lol. we don't celebrate the traditional 'religious' affair, but we sure do like to eat good food and to catch up with our families every now and then. we had one dinner at my sister-in-laws yesterday. it was really great to see everyone and all the kids and even though madeleine's molars are coming in, she was in a surprisingly good mood. we had a second dinner here at our house this evening. i made lasagna and ended up drinking maybe a bit too much wine. haha. now on with some pictures...

as it turns out, matthew no longer qualifies to be in the twenty seven forever club. this is because today he turned twenty eight! we celebrated his birthday yesterday, due to it being family day long weekend and all. me and madeleine got him 'He-man and the Masters of the Universe' season one, volume one, and we also got him...

...for our lunch box collection.

also, we tried taking madeleine for a sled ride yesterday, which she was not having absolutely anything to do with...we got a few good videos of her crying her face off and that is about it. i think we would have been okay, but maddie's fear of dogs took over the outing when we passed a house with a dog who followed us all the way down the length of his fence and barked his head off at us. needless to say, madeleine was hysterical. maybe next time.

this beauty arrived for me at my house today. i don't know what it is about different country variations, but i think they are so interesting. i am really excited to add her to my collection. the region of Macau has been known to produce the most unusual alternate versions of some of the earliest well-known ponies and they are a bit more rare.

madeleine turned one today!

i can hardly even believe that a whole year has passed. i feel as though i missed it somehow. i tried desperately hard to be in the moment and not take it for granted. all those middle of the nights when i was beyond exhaustion and i kept telling myself to enjoy these quiet moments together. all those moments that a year later i can hardly remember. it must have been the sleep deprivation.

anyways, we had a little party for her, which was quite the shaker, i might add. just my family and a few close friends. we got her a new car seat for her birthday...I know, fun parents, right?

i made her a pink polka dot cake (which i actually made from a Zucchini Oatmeal Muffin recipe, so it was at least mostly healthy...shhhhhhh!) . we sang happy birthday.

i cried, how cliche'.

after the party we went to padmanadi's for a yummy vegan dinner with josh and rebecca...oh, and kasim brought out a little cake for maddie and put 'happy birthday' on the stereo and sang to her. hahaha. it was awesome.

all in all, a pretty great day.

tomorrow is toddlerhood. me and matt are not in the least prepared.
